1. Jonathan :

Hello all,

This issue's article is a pretty good one. I'll confess that I don't usually take the time to learn all the features that my programs have.

This has been something that I've really noticed since I started downloading the videos at Wordnet University. Dreamweaver and Fireworks were two programs that I'd used quite a bit.. but after downloading some of the videos at WNU, I was embarrassed by some of the basic features that I hadn't been using at all. I hope to redesign PRO Website Management in the future, for fun, experience, and to make it look better.

The Cool Tool in this issue is Xenu Link Sleuth, it's .. well, go ahead and read that section. :)

I appreciate everybody who takes the time to send me emails with suggestions, comments, and more. I really, really appreciate it.

Enjoy this issue,

2. Your Software is Your Friend by Ralph Hilliard

I once revamped one of my existing sites, a site that
happens to contain more than 150 pages.

The goal was to go from a java based roll-over buttons
navigation bar to a regular navigation bar with image links.

I set one of my designers to work and after about 20 hours
worth of work the site was completed. Well, as things
sometime happen, we lost many of the changes before it
was published to the web and BEFORE we had backed it up.

I guess the first thing I should say is to ALWAYS back
up your work AS you are working on it.

But the real pain was in having to do the work over again.
Somehow, when you make a mistake such as this, you try
desperately to figure out a way to do it again, but much
faster so it doesn't feel like a total disaster.

Well, I spent some time looking at my Dreamweaver
software and lo and behold there it was, a find and
replace tool I never noticed before. I was then able
to literally make the changes to the site in about
30 minutes that had previously taken 20 hours. You think
I would be upset that I didn't find this solution earlier,
but frankly I was more relieved I didn't have to pay for
another 20 hours worth of design time.

My point is this. I think you will be surprised to find
out the various features that your design tools possess.
If you are like me, you don't want a tutorial, you want
to dig in and figure things out on your own. The only problem
with this approach is that once you get fairly comfortable
using the tool, you never finish looking at the other
features; features that can sometimes save you lots of
time and work.

Let your software be your friend and work for you. I
challenge you to open it up and try a few of those
buttons or tutorials that you've never used before. It
will make a difference.

3. Cool Tool : Xenu Link Sleuth

The description that is provided on the Xenu Link Sleuth page is so good that it isn't even necessary for me to write about it. Just read the description provided. :-)

Xenu's Link Sleuth is a spidering software that checks Web sites for broken links. Link verification is done on "normal" links, images, frames, plug-ins, backgrounds, local image maps, style sheets, scripts and java applets. It displays a continously updated list of URLs which you can sort by different criteria. A report can be produced at any time.

This program is mentioned in chapter 12 on 404 errors in my ebook, Website Traffic Demolition.

A cool tool can be a service, script, program, book, etc. Something useful to webmasters can qualify.
